The study was a stratified, randomized, double-blind parallel-group clinical study on 114 sixth-form or university students with mild to mild-moderate facial acne. They were aged between 16 and 25 years. No patient had been on any therapy, oral or topical, for 4 weeks prior to the study. No patient had previously been treated by a dermatologist. The therapy was used twice daily. The active treatment consisted of 2% salicylic acid lotion (Table I) and the placebo was a 10% hydroalcoholic lotion, the base into which the 2% salicylic acid had been dissolved. The active and placebo agents were incorporated into cleansing pads made up of two differently textured materials laminated together to give a coarse side and a smooth side enabling facial oil to be absorbed and the lotion to be delivered.
